Information About Chiropractic
What Is Chiropractic?
As a chiropractor I look at your spine because it holds your nerve system. The reason this is so important is because your nerve system is the master control of your entire body. If the bones of your spine aren't working correctly due to stress or trauma, this will cause nerve interference. This nerve interference will affect your body's ability to adapt and respond. This in time will affect your heath and wellbeing.
History of Chiropractic?
The "founding father" of chiropractic, Dr. D.D. Palmer, developed a theory that spinal misalignment caused nerve pressure or irritation which in turn caused various ailments. Stress on our bodies over time affects our tissues and alignement, eventually impacting on our central nervous system. Dr. Palmer realized that the structure and condition of the body influenced how the body functioned and its ability to heal itself, and that healing could take place often without the use of drugs or surgery.
This simple philosophy has healed people and has prevented unwanted injury and illness for over a century. But to fully understand the chiropractic perspective, one must learn a bit about the nervous system, or how our bodies are "wired."
How Our "Wiring" Works
The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The brain is divided into sections and stores and receives an incredible amount of information. In order for this information to be transmitted throughout our body, we have "nerves" which is our "wiring" and provides a pathway for this information to travel. Our spinal cord is made up of bundles of these nerves. The spine both houses and protects the spinal cord.
Illness and pain often result from misalignment of the spine which presses on nerves and interferes with our pathway of information sharing. Misalignment and nerve dysfunction can result from any number of factors including as accidents, trauma, stress, chronic tension and/or over-use.
What is Subluxation?
Subluxation is the misalignment of one vertebrae in relation to the next. A subluxation can cause pain because when the bones move they press on nerves that exit out holes provided by the interface between two adjacent vertebrae.
How We Get to the Source of Your Problem?
Doctors of chiropractic are trained through careful touch and observation to locate the source of subluxation and nerve dysfunction. Sometimes the source of the problem may be far away from where you actually feel pain or discomfort.
The important thing to remember is the chiropractic is a holistic approach the works with the whole body to try to address the underlying source of one's problems.
